Each year about 80 percent of the world’s entire population of sandhill cranes spend a few short weeks fattening up along a 35-mile stretch of the Platte River. The people who live in the surrounding areas, such as Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney don’t think much of the birds, but people from around the world come here to see them roost en mass on the river at night. It really is a beautiful event.

Heading back towards Colorado, we stopped at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

Sarah said she valued life too much to ever try rock climbing.

I’m sometimes amazed by strands of life where it seems improbable. I wonder why this lone tree sprouted, or how it continued to grow in an area void of other plantlife. I wonder if it is still alive, dorment until a wetter, warmer season. Has this tree ever flourished with bountiful green leaves? Or has its existence always been as meager as its current situation?

Sarah and I are spending tonight in Sante Fe, New Mexico. So far, it’s been a marvelous trip. We set no agenda, made no plans or reservations. We simply let ourselves be at the mercy of our whims.
