I’ve been busy, busy, busy lately. It seems like its been forever since I’ve had a chance to sit down and smell the roses.

I used to make photos similar to this one by using patience and planning.

Patience is a luxury that has been hard to find lately. I was driving back to Grand Island yesterday when I came upon this photo. I had an assignment coming up and I also knew that Monday was going to be ridiculously jammed packed with things to do. I thought if I could find a feature photo for Tuesday’s paper it might lighten up the work load. I had noticed about 5 minutes prior how nice the light was starting to become.

About that time, I crossed the bridge over the Platte River on a divided Hwy. 281 going into Grand Island when I spotted this deer. So I hit the breaks, pulled a U-turn, sped across the bridge, pulled a second U-turn, pulled over, shot 5 frames before the deer ran off, hopped in my car and away I went.

Strangely the methods didn’t agree with the result at all. What we have here is a nice quiet moment of peaceful tranquility. Yet I shot it while walking at a quick pace, not even able to stop my feet to take the photo.

Then it was gone.

There is a story about two bulls sitting on top of a hill. Maybe you’ve heard it. They are overlooking a herd of cattle when the younger one says, “I’m going to run down there and f*@% one of them cows!” The older and wiser bull, in a relaxed tone, says, “Why don’t you *walk* down there and f*@% every one of them?

I hope when this busy time ends I’ll know how relax and get the most out of life.

Hey, it turns out I wasn’t done shooting engagement sessions for the year.

Congratulations to Steve and Sara!

I’ve had a few photographers ask me lately what I’ve been using to light my portraits.

I usually just use one light so I can quick on my feet and shoot several settings in a short time. I use an Alien Bees 800 monolight juiced by a power unit I put together with a 12-volt marine battery and a pure-sine inverter. I sometimes use a softbox, but usually use an umbrella for portability.

The power unit lets me use a monolight just about anywhere, which is nice. It also allows me to use a model light, which is especially useful when shooting during the last bits of twilight, like I did here with Steve and Sara last weekend.

No wedding or football game for me tomorrow. I might get a chance to catch up on some of my imaging, rake some leaves, and photograph another engagement session. I might even get a chance to photograph this year’s edition of the Hickenbottom family Christmas card. Last year’s pregnancy edition will be hard to top.

At any rate, I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a very busy October.

Congratulations to Timmi and Josh. The two got married on a beautiful fall day at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. A lovely reception at the local Howard Johnson followed.

So pretty much every Saturday for the past couple months I’ve been shooting either weddings or Nebraska football games.

Lets just say the weddings have been much more joyous.

This Nebraska team is bad. I mean rotten tomatoes bad. I mean you can count on the Big XII player of the week being a member of the opposing team pretty much every week bad. I mean having the #117 worst defense out of 117 teams in Division 1A bad. I mean going 7 consecutive quarters without a touchdown bad earlier this year. I mean letting Kansas score touchdowns on 10 straight possessions today bad. I mean not going to a bowl game bad. I mean allowing the other team 600 yards of offense most weeks bad. I mean allowing a single player to rack up 200 yards rushing in a single quarter bad.

Make no mistake, this team is bad.

For what might have been my last engagement session of the year, I photographed Tami and Seth on a night when it got dark earlier than planned. Nothing to fear, we made several nice pictures with moody skies and lit-up street-scapes. This photo was taken at Pier Park near downtown Grand Island.
