So Beautiful.
That’s how I’d describe Nicole and Mike’s York Country Club reception Saturday night. The ceremony wasn’t too shabby either.
I couldn’t believe how relaxed the both of them were early in their wedding day. It’s nice to see a couple take everything in stride.
One of the mini-highlights of the day was talking shop with Mike’s father, who is a photography enthusiast. In fact he helped me light this evening portrait.
I’ll try to show more tomorrow.

Lake of the Ozarks night photos: 3 of 3.
My parents were quite gracious in providing Sarah and I with condo accommodations last week at the Lake of the Ozarks as a wedding anniversary gift. We stayed there with Sarah’s sister, Laura (see yesterday’s wedding photos) and her boyfriend, Aaron.
On the first night I decided to pull out the tripod and shoot some night scenes. This is the view from our balcony looking over the lake towards Lake of the Ozarks State Park.
It was a fabulous vacation–one greatly appreciated.

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Shelby and
Brandy’s wedding near Horton, Kansas. The two really had a great time and Brandy
was absolutely stunning in her wedding gown.

The two had a really nice outdoor wedding at the farm where Shelby grew up.
We were blessed with nice (and quite warm) weather.

Shelby is my wife, Sarah’s cousin. It was a lot of fun to be able to party a
little while doing my job. It was even more fun getting to watch Owen at his
first wedding reception. Isn’t he getting to be a big boy?

Another nice thing about shooting weddings within the family is that I get an
opportunity to make non-flattering photos of people like Laura, my sister-in-law.
Sorry Laura. It had to be done.

I love this photo.
Whenever it works out–and it doesn’t always work out–I like to try to take my wedding couples outside for just a quickie portrait at dusk.
That’s exactly what I did with Diann and Lee Saturday in Kearney. This is Central Avenue in downtown, so you know it had to be quick to avoid becoming part of the cobblestone.
Thanks guys for having me photograph your wedding day!

While giving me a tour of her grandparents’ farm near Litchfield, Lacey told me the one photo she would like to get from her engagement session with Jon would be a photo of the two of them sitting atop this hill in her favorite alfalfa field, a special place where to two like to sit back and enjoy the quiet scenery.
We planned to come to this spot and shoot from this vista during sunset. As storm clouds started to roll in, it became apparent that we would not have a sunset and that it was going to get dark earlier than normal.
Sometimes when it gets dark early, it shortens my engagement sessions. But with the spectacular lightning show we got to witness, we went longer than originally planned. This photo, one of the last taken before storm winds came down on us, was the perfect payoff for our patience.

While I was photographing Wendy and Derek Saturday, Alyssa was
busy capturing Bill and Kay’s wedding day. In typical Alyssa fashion, she knocked
it out of the park. I love all the subtle facial expressions she’s so tuned
into. I love the look on Bill’s face (second image) when he sees his bride dressed
in her gown for the first time. Priceless.
I can tell from the photos that Bill and Kay are a loving couple
who love to laugh. That’s great to see two people like that get together. Congratulations,
you two!!!

Congratulations to Wendy and Derek!
I really like a lot of the photos from their wedding. It seems like a lot
of times – even if I’m spending more than 10 hours with a couple – I don’t
get opportunities to shoot nice portraits of the couple. That wasn’t a problem
Saturday. It helps a lot that they chose venues that lend themselves to nice
photos. I really liked the old windows in the study at Trinity United Methodist
Church. Then the reception was at Babel’s
Barn in Wood River. I’m a big fan of that place. There are a few neat
spots there – plus there is a giant open field on the west side of the property
that lends itself great for sunset portraits.
I’m not sure I’ve ever been treated better by a wedding party. I was showered
with compliments all day and night. It’s nice to feel appreciated. I hope
everybody enjoys the photos!

As promised yesterday, here are a couple similar photos taken of Scott and Jessica at Mormon Island State Park. I took the above photo, then we shot a few other things for a few minutes before I decided to go back to the tree and light it.
In the field I was quite certain I liked the lit version better and even showed it to Scott and Jessica on-the-spot. But then when I started editing the photos, I started really liking the top one. I can’t make up my mind.
Now I’m hoping that you–yes you!–will share your comments and let me know which one you like best. If you want you can tell me why. But I would love to hear from as many of you as possible.
Thanks in advance.

I kind of know a few of the couples I’ve shot engagement sessions for lately. But none have been as familiar to me as Scott and Jessica.
Scott, a photographer at the Grand Island Independent, has been a great friend since Sarah and I moved to Grand Island (really since before). I was super jazzed when I learned of their engagement last fall. Then I was deeply honored when they asked me to photograph their wedding. If their wedding is anything like their engagement session, it will be a lot of fun (not to mention beautiful).
For a setting we started at the Eddy Street underpass in Grand Island and ended up at Mormon Island State Park. Here’s a few shots from the underpass.
I should really shoot down there more often. There are just some really cool looks you can create down there–if you are willing to brave the discarded 40oz. bottles and the lingering scent of urine. The late afternoon light bouncing off those walls makes for some brilliant opportunities.
Tomorrow I’ll show a couple pics from Mormon Island State Park that are similar to each other and solicit opinions from you, my fine readers. The setting out there is a stark contrast from the underpass.
