Photojournalists: 2009 Savage Seminar cometh. Your input desired.

Each year the Savage seminar is a great educational and inspirational weekend for photojournalists.  This year I have the proud honor of speaking.

The circumstances around my presentation are probably less than inspiring.  With the state of newspapers in shambles, news of mass layoffs occurring daily, and many working and student photojournalists left wondering about the viability of their chosen professions, the NNPA thought it would be topical for me to talk about my experience leaving the industry.

It’s my goal to help any photographers who want to continue making a living through photography to have a clear view of some of their alternatives and help them maneuver around some of the obstacles they may face.

I know many of the people who follow my blog are photojournalists.  This is a call for your help. Whether you plan to attend or not (and I hope you will!) what kinds of questions do you have?  What specific points would you like to see me address?  What’s on your mind?  Please leave comments below.

Also please help spread the word about the Savage Seminar.  Feel free to share the flier image below.  Please email, tweet, retweet, or share this post to your Facebook friends.  You’ll find tools to do just that below this post.

Email subscriptions are back

I quit sending email updates a while back because they were a pain in my butt.  Now it should all be automated.

I know many of you get posts from RSS feeds.  That will continue to be available.  Send me an email if you want to know more about that.  Otherwise you can subscribe or unsubscribe here.

If you got an email notification, it’s because you were on my list last year when I was still using it.

You can sign up right here:

Note: there is also a [un]subscribe link on the bottom of this and every page of my blog.

Engaged: Laurie and Bryce

While in Grand Island this weekend I met up with Laurie and Bryce to shoot their engagement session.  I loved being back in my old favorite shooting grounds!  I thrive on variety and enjoy the challenges of new places, but there is something to be said about totally mastering a location.  I may be the only photographer in the world who repeatedly shoots in the Eddy Street underpass, but I LOVE IT!!!  Sure, it’s deafeningly loud, filled with broken glass, and sometimes smells of urine.  But the light, color and texture down there is amazing!  Like I told Laurie and Bryce, it’s not the type of place you would want to spend an afternoon–the the photos are SWEET!

Then we went to Mormon Island State Park…another fav of mine.

And my subjects?  I was able to work effortlessly with Laurie and Bryce.  Thanks for such a great time!  I’m looking forward to the Cottonmill in June!

Maggie and Josh’s wedding

It’s feels nice to end this long segment of blog silence with images from Maggie and Josh’s wedding in Grand Island, Neb.

I couldn’t get over how relaxed the two of them were going into their wedding day.  Additionally both Maggie and Josh were exceptionally  giving to Heidi* and I.  It really made the day run smooth.  I love how the two seemed more concerned with enjoying the moment than stressed about the pomp and circumstance of their wedding–and that’s not to say it wasn’t a nice wedding, because it was absolutely delightful!  The ceremony was at Calvary Lutheran Church and the reception was held at the Liederkranz in Grand Island.
