Each year about 80 percent of the world’s entire population of sandhill cranes spend a few short weeks fattening up along a 35-mile stretch of the Platte River. The people who live in the surrounding areas, such as Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney don’t think much of the birds, but people from around the world come here to see them roost en mass on the river at night. It really is a beautiful event.
